Grace and Robyn interviewing the dancers (artist’s impression by Robyn)

We met up with a group of passionate hip hop dancers to find out about their exciting experiences.

What has been your proudest moment as a dancer?
Sofia: For me it was winning the Nationals with my dance group in Holland, where I used to live.
Marie: I just love the satisfaction of being in class and enjoying a routine, it’s a great feeling.
Lauren: My proudest moment was being selected for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If you’d told me last year that I would be in the festival I wouldn’t have even believed it. There’s just so many famous names there.

How did it feel performing at the festival?
Lauren: Terrifying. The audience were so close, it was terrifying but it was totally amazing at the same time.

How did you initially get into hip hop dancing?
Sofia: My Mum was into gymnastics and ballet so she really encouraged me to start dancing when I was really young. My dad introduced me to hip hop music when I was about seven. I listened to Snoop Dogg a couple of times and I was hooked. It was just really good to dance to.

Do you have any goals with your career in dancing?
Marie: I don’t have any goals in particular. I just want to be happy with what I’m doing and where I’m at. I want to continue to push myself constantly.
Sofia: Yeah, I just want to keep pushing myself for as long as I can.
Lauren: I’d really like to travel the world and explore new styles of dance and dancers that I’ve never heard of before.

What does dancing mean to you?

Sofia: It’s just something I really love doing. It’s an opportunity to really express myself
Lauren: It sounds cheesy but it has just become such a huge part of my life, I really love it.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?
Lauren: It’s amazing. All the hard work you’ve put in and all the stress you can just let out when you’re dancing.
Marie: After all the practice you get to just show off what you can do, It’s really amazing.
Sofia: Something just takes over you and you just give it everything you have. Backstage it gets so nerve wracking but once the music has started you can just let go and enjoy it.

We wish Lauren, Sofia and Marie all the best with their dancing careers!
